Sides of the line, Ink drawing on paper, handmade quilt with the serigraphic images and a video projection
The long-term association with craftswomen, who came from less privileged and socially challenged caste background in India helped me to know the precarious nature of the rebel there. Where the desire of gender equality comes up with the cultural shaming. In fact, many women acquiesce to such a patriarchal system, thinking it’s a cultural obligation. The feminist ideologies, the thought of gender equality penetrates in different societies in different ways. The audio-visual installation ‘sides of the line’ reflects upon the thin line between aspirations and confinements. I look at the line, the tread, the rope as it affirms the existence of binaries. It separates two worlds and yet associate them by being a point of contact.
The handmade quilt is made up of fabric donated by each woman working at Quilt Culture. The photographs of them, doing multiple roles in a day are serigraph on fabric. The juxtaposition of the drawing, quilt and the video reflect upon the struggle of balancing between two sides of line where binaries coexist.
We have made sure SHE follows this way,
The hollow pedestal is quite high
Falling is not an option!
